Counter Depth vs. Standard Refrigerator

I was just curious to know if any of my fellow bloggers purchased Counter Depth refrigerators vs. Standard?   Was it aesthetics that lead you to do so?

I was in H.H. Gregg yesterday, shopping for the best deal and I came across a pretty good one.  Well when I gave the Salesman the fridge nook measurements he told us that we'd have some serious counter to fridge over hang if we went with the Standard fridge (something I'd never even thought about) so we might want to consider Counter Depth.

Are measurements are:
Height = 71 1/4"
Width = 40 3/4"
And to give us an idea of depth my PM said that counter tops are 25 1/4' off of the wall.

The Salesman showed us a Counter Depth Fridge against a cabinet that was pretty close to our dimensions.. and I did love the look of it being in linewith the Cabinets and Counters but of course it was almost double the price of the fridge we were looking at & much smaller for the price.

I'm a fan of clean lines so I wanted something Standard like the one pictured. below (French Doors without the ice maker or water on the outside)

Now I'm wondering if Counter Depth is the way to go, or if the overhang will be something I can live with.

  1. We have started looking for ours as well (way in advance). I have to say with the Palermo, we have the luxury of the counter only being on one side of the fridge. So, even if you go standard, it won't be as noticeable of a bumpout since it goes counter -> fridge -> wall. On the flip side, you also open up the fridge into a walkway from the dining room and across from a wall. What might be more important to consider is the depth with the door open vs. the distance from the wall behind the fridge to the wall across from it. What I'm trying to say is, we haven't made up our minds yet.

    1. Good point Brian! I'm going standard. Lowes has such a good deal on the model we want this week so we're going for it. Good luck on deciding what you want.

  2. If you don't have to dont go counter my parents got a counter and hate it but with their kitchen they had to because of the layout it doesn't fit enough food and my mom curses at it on a daily basis, that's also because its a ge profile and ge has a bad wrap with fridges. If it is in a nook, go full size if you think you can get past it not lining up with the cabinets on the one side or even ask your PM if he can move the cabinets forward to line up with the edge of the wall I know that other bloggers have done it with the cabinets over top of the fridge

  3. We went with the fridge offered through Ryan, it does stick out. But, I would rather have the space than something perfectly aligned (and I am all about alignment!). I think functionality trumps aesthetics :-)

  4. Since you are asking for opinions, I battled that also, we are a family of four and counter depth seemed so tiny....You do lose a lot of space. ...Ok, so I just went to measure mine, and its 34deep including the handles and I have a large over 30cu ft Samsung....I looks like a fridge in a kitchen...LOL.....Dont think so much about it...:) I am a fan of the larger fridge. I think it will look just fine.. :)

    1. Thanks DW for bringing me back to my senses, I'm famous for overthinking things. The Counter Depth fridge was about 23 cu ft. Definelty would't work in our house.

  5. I THOUGHT I wanted a counter depth fridge because it was cute! But at the end of the day is was too small. I switched my thought with the quickness. Actually the 28 cubic feet extended just a tad bit from the counter but nothing worth screaming and running through the house about--I actually love our fridge and perfect for the two of us. For a larger family, I believe the 31 cubic feet is the best size, but it's just the two of us and it's perfect.

  6. We are building a Palermo as well and are currently trying to decide on a refrigerator. Do you know what size the opening is for the fridge width wise? What is the width of the fridge you ended up getting?
